I have read a lot about this place lately, mostly about the adventurous and allegedly amazing pork dishes that populate the menu. Looking for a new spot to add to my rotation, I decided to give it a try on Saturday night. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed with the room. Think rustic farmhouse, but not over the top … tastefully done. It’s a big space with high ceilings, yet it still feels comfortable. Adding immensely to the vibe is the fact that they pump great tunes into the room at a well balanced volume – just quiet enough to talk over, and yet loud enough that the table next to you won’t hear every word of your conversation. The bar selection is good, with five or six beers on tap (mostly east coast micro-brews), a serviceable wine list, and prices are reasonable. My meal at Irving Mill was fantastic. The dishes were daring enough to impress any food snob, yet the menu was diverse and varied, well suited to please pretty much anyone you bring. I’m going back soon … and bringing friends.

Food Rundown:

Spicy Pulled Pork Sandwich with Potato Buns
Had to try a pork dish, and this one was a winner. An order is two slider sized pork sandwiches that were fantastic. Spicy and well proportioned … the starchy potato bun was a nice touch.

Eggplant & Ricotta Bruschetta
A pretty large portion, but I was happily surprised to find that they halved the bread ahead of time, so it was very easy to handle, and delicious.

Irving Mill Burger
This is actually a very good burger, but not fifteen dollar good. Every once in a while you can catch a burger/beer special where this thing is on sale … I would recommend waiting until you can snag it for less.

Whole Loup De Mer
A really great fish dish for two. I wouldn’t recommend having it served at the table whole, which is an option, but a lot of work. Instead, have the kitchen filet it. Very flavorful white fish, and the bed of quinoa (think barley) and walnuts were a nice hearty contrast to the light and citrusy fish. Excellent choice if you are with someone who isn’t an adventurous diner but wants to try something a little bit outside the box.
