Believe it or not, it’s possible for Immaculate Infatuation to love a place even when the food isn’t the main attraction. It’s rare, but it’s possible, and Esperanto is the perfect example. A local Infatuation mainstay, Esperanto’s got that little something special that keeps it in heavy rotation despite average food. It’s consistently packed with people looking to hang out and have a good time. The vibe is contagious, especially after a couple six dollar Caipiroskas (vodka, lime, sugar) to the dome. Going out on the town on a Friday or Saturday night? Esperanto is the perfect choice for your pre-game food and drink, especially when it’s nice out, with the windows open and the outdoors in full effect. The price is right too; all entrees are under twenty dollars. Just beware, there’s almost always a wait during primetime but they move pretty fast. Big group? Make a reservation.

Food Rundown:

Esperanto Mussels
Served on the half shell, roasted with garlic and herbs. I keep ordering it because that description gets me every time, yet it’s always a let down. Get the crab in banana leaf or tapas plate instead.

Crab in Banana Leaf
Go-to appetizer here in my opinion. While it’s not going to change your world, you’ll happily clean your plate. It’s basically a crab meat dip with plantains. Good stuff.

Empanadas
Chimichurri sauce is solid and you’ll eat them if they’re in front of you, but critical eaters will think they’re too dry and a little on the doughy side.

Grilled Tuna
Easily my favorite thing on this menu and exactly what you should get here. A nice heaping chunk of tuna, grilled perfectly rare and served with collard greens and cilantro rice. I love the chili adobo (whatever that is) sauce that they prepare it with. This is the dish that keeps me coming back. For sixteen dollars, it’s a steal.

Recommended Sides
Cilantro rice, fried yuccas, and grilled chorizo are all great and cheap.

Notes On Entrees
Don’t get the filet mignon. It’s just not good. It’s too tough and not a good cut of meat. The carne asada is the steak dish to get if you’re going with beef, but honestly that’s not amazing either. Ignore the pork tenderloin as well. It’s generally a little dry and overcooked. Stick with the fish here.
