Damn. We’ve been sleepin’ on Gari…hard. This is some of the finest fish in all of Manhattan. Their $50 Omakase is as visually stimulating as sushi can get. This isn’t just fish on top of rice – no, no. Each piece is prepared like its own entree – stacked, coated and finished with different ingredients. The wow factor, both for your eyes and mouth, is worth the price of admission. Don’t even bother scouring the menu to figure out what to order. It’s all about the omakase and, we promise, you won’t be disappointed.
Manhattan’s midsection is loaded with Japanese restaurants…most of which suck. Speaking of suck, restaurant row on 46th street is filled entirely with overpriced tourist fodder, but don’t be fooled; Sushi of Gari is as legit as they come. Next time Mom needs some Pre-Theatre Eats, impress her with a trip to Gari 46. Plus, if you work in Midtown and ever want to treat yourself to a fine meal while sitting at your desk, Gari delivers and delivers well. Check the twitpic. That’s $25 worth of Gari 46 rolls, delivery style. I booked a band on Jimmy Fallon that day, sushi was my reward.
Food Rundown:
Tempura
One of Gari’s signature apps, if you dig tempura, absolutely order their lightly deep fried shrimp and vegetable tempura dish to share.
Hamaguri
Up the ante on standard miso soup and try Gari’s hamaguri – a fish broth with little neck clams and scallion. It’s excellent.
Steamed Crab Dumplings
A standout appetizer, these crab dumps are worth an order for the table.
Omakase
Gari’s signature. This is the reason why you’re coming here. The chef’s daily selection of fresh, seasonal, sushi and sashimi. Don’t even think about being a wuss and ordering sushi by the slice. It’ll wind up being more expensive and nowhere near as amazing, I promise. The Omakase is exactly what you need. It’s $50 well spent as you’ll be thinking about it for days to come. Although the rotation changes everyday, here are some of our favorite preparations we’ve seen more than once: Salmon with broiled tomato, tuna with tofu, red snapper with salad, and, our favorite, yellowtail with jalapeno. Check out the twitpic, there’s a reason why people freak out about this place.
Rolls
You can’t go wrong with any of their rolls, but here it goes with the favorites. The fried oyster roll is straight chronic, it’s finished in a spicy sauce of sorts which is incredible. Love the fatty tuna with scallion as well as the spicy tuna, they slay tuna. spicy sauteed scallop is another big winner, don’t miss that one. Lastly, personally I’m an eel/cucumber kind of guy, and they raise the bar to the next level with this one.
