A while back, we pointed out in the Txikito review that this particular block of NYC happens to be in an ideal corridor for first date dining. El Quinto Pino is certainly part of that equation, but we say so a bit reluctantly. Why? Well, it’s a cozy little wine and tapas bar with character, so that’s fine. But our reservations are two fold. To start, it’s a really tiny place and can be a bit uncomfortable when it’s crowded. But the other problem is actually the thing that El Quinto Pino is known for best – the uni panini. The very sandwich that sits atop countless “Best Of” lists can be your own first date worst enemy. Yes it’s delicious, but it’s also packed with so much wasabi that it’s almost impossible to eat without causing you to tear up and make ridiculous faces. And nothing says “get me out of here” like a girl who appears to be crying for no reason.

So while we do think El Quinto Pino is Perfect For a glass of wine and some quick food, we’ll call it “suitable” for a First/Early in the Game Date. You can’t really come here and not order that sandwich – and now you know that there are some consequences that come along with it. Rely on the other options in the neighborhood first, and if you do wind up here with someone you would like to impress, make sure to keep a really sad story in your back pocket – that should help with damage control once the waterworks start.

Food Rundown:

Uni Panini
A rightfully celebrated stroke of sandwich genius. This is a thin baguette stuffed with sea urchin and what tastes like wasabi, but is actually a Korean mustard oil of sorts. It’s punchy but also delicate, and it rules.

Fideua
A paella dish, made with thin, angel hair type noodles instead of rice. Not bad, but nothing you’ll be rushing back for.

Croquetas de Jamón
We’re usually fans of croquetas, partly because that’s fun to say. But these had too much of the blue cheesy taste and not enough of the Spanish hammy taste.

Pescado en Adobo
Flash fried blue fish nuggets that came highly recommended by our waitress. We liked them, but they would taste better served in a paper bowl on a beach somewhere.
