We don’t get to Fort Greene much, so before digging any deeper into local favorites like No. 7, Chez Oscar and the newly opened annex of Walter Foods, we first needed to check out this neighborhood’s crown jewel, The General Greene. If this is any indication of the “general” level of deliciousness Fort Greene has to offer, we should probably get our asses out here more often.
The General Greene isn’t just a solid neighborhood option, it’s a restaurant worth traveling for. At first glance, the menu doesn’t seem anything more than ordinary, but once the food starts arriving at your table, you realize there’s a lot more to this place than initially meets the eye. They may serve some standard fare like salads and sandwiches, but there are also things here that are more ballsy than what you might usually find at the local Neighborhood Hang. We were impressed with the creativity and originality of dishes like monkfish with porcini gnocchi and lamb meat loaf. It’s also a good sign when a restaurant has a list of craft beers on draft from Maine and Pennsylvania that we’ve never heard of. Service is pleasant, though at times awkward, and cocktail list can be hit or miss, but none of that matters because the food is excellent. The General is a solid option for pretty much anything, whether it’s a morning after brunch, or dinner with the parentals. We’ll definitely be back. And soon.
7 Spice Onion Rings
Obviously, we had to order these. 7 spices you say? Let’s do this. These are thick, meaty fried onions that you need a fork and knife to get into. If you’re a fan of o-rings, these should not be missed.
Spinach Artichoke Dip
Heavy on the artichoke, light on the cream. We enjoyed this because it’s not incredibly heavy as many artichoke dips tend to be, and it’s a nice share plate for the table.
Toasted Brussels Sprouts & Wild Mushrooms
Brussels sprouts got so overplayed at one point recently that now it’s possible they may be underplayed a bit. Actually, that’s not true. We just stopped ordering them over the last year because it felt like every review had brussels sprouts in the Food Rundown and, not surprisingly, they were always good. Now that kale and carrots are quickly replacing sprouts on menus around the city, we felt it was safe to start writing about them again. Surprise, surprise – The General’s sprouts with mushrooms, smoked bacon, and white wine are excellent.
Monkfish & Porcini Gnocchi
If there was an Infatuation Hall Of Fame for our favorite dishes ever, this one would probably be in it. An unlikely combination of mushroom gnocchi and seared pieces of monkfish work wonders in a white wine cream sauce. It’s a truly incredible dish, and one they should never take off the menu.
General Greene Fried Chicken
A high quality and plentiful serving of fried chicken. The bird is nice and juicy and the skin is crispy – made even better with some hot sauce on the side. The cheddar-jalapeno polenta muffin it came with was also good, but we could have done without the boring slab bacon collard greens.
This was incredibly flavorful and incredibly different. The perfect bite had a little bit of everything – roasted carrots, string beans, garlic “dirty” mash and some lamb loaf. Order it.
Dessert is an important part of The General Green dining experience, mainly thanks to the salted caramel ice cream sundae which is served atop a caramel cake and then covered in caramel sauce, whipped cream and pretzel brittle. We’re suckers for that salty and the sweet combo. Also, the apple and raspberry pie wasn’t too bad either.
Buttermilk Biscuit with Sausage Gravy & Eggs
As good as any breakfast plate you can find. There are lots of sausage bits in the gravy that are thicker than cake batter and the over easy egg cooked perfectly. All good, simple ingredients done right.
We’ve never had it, but it’s a fan favorite and it looked insanely good. 2 eggs on top of a gruyere grilled cheese, herb bechamel & shaved prosciutto. We’re ordering this next time.
