The Cleanse: Entry #1

Two burgers, five glasses of wine, pork belly, pizza, beers, some bone marrow, beers, a bowl or two of pork ramen, beers, sliders, oysters, fried chicken, a bacon sandwich, beers, and that thing on the left. Pretty much your average week’s worth of eating, Infatuation style.

If you’ve been paying any attention over the last year to our Twitpics and/or our general approach to eating things, you’ll note that moderation is not something we’re particularly good at (or fond of). Luckily, we haven’t yet made the full transformation into cranky, obese food bloggers, but we do feel like absolute sh*t most of the time. Thanks to us, you will never have to wonder what a 5,000 calorie per day diet of animal parts and booze does to you. It makes you feel terrible. You’re welcome.

The only reasonable remedy that we could come up with was to hit the reset button. Time for a cleanse. But not one of those ‘all juice, take a week off of work and spend it in the bathroom’ cleanses. We need to eat real food, and feel better.

We decided on one week of all raw, all vegan food from One Lucky Duck, the takeout storefront of Infatuation Approved restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. Sarma hooked us up with a seven day program that we started Saturday, and all this week we’ll be writing about what we’re eating and how we’re feeling. Check back daily. Here’s entry number one, roughly 48 hours in.

What We’re Eating (Saturday & Sunday)

Zucchini & Tomato Lasagna, Falafel Salad, “Taco” Salad, Portabella & Hempseed Burger, Strawberry Blond Shake (Steinthal), Cacao Latte Shake (Stang), Goji High Shake, Swan Greens, Green Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Vanilla Crispies with Almond Milk, Rosemary Crackers and Hummus, Spicy Cashews, Striped Cinnamon Squares, Mallomars, Lemon Bars, Vanilla Mint Chip “Ice Cream”

Stang

The first two days of this thing have been a breeze, mostly because the food actually tastes good and leaves me full, but also because I have quarantined myself in my apartment to avoid temptation. I don’t feel much different yet, but my senses are definitely becoming more acute. I can now smell food cooking from several miles away. The juices, the falafel salad, and the burger have been my favorites so far. Have had a few small headaches probably from either caffeine or pork bun withdrawls. Actually, probably both.

Steinthal

I’m a creature of habit and repetition and my initial reaction to something outside my comfort zone is that of immediate rejection. Vegan food? Yikes. No thanks. Well, I’ve been forcing myself to eat all of the food Sarma has laid out for us and am discovering that A.) some of it is actually pretty awesome and B.) my taste buds adjust pretty damn quickly when I’m starving and know this is my only option. I’m loving all the shakes and juices. I’m sure they’re way better for me than my usual regime of Emergen-C, Vitamin Water and Coke. The spicy cashews and cinnamon squares are tasty, filling snacks and I needed them when I couldn’t get through more than two bites of the portabella and hempseed burger. Not my thing. I’m a big fan of the salads. The taco and falafel salads are hearty and pack a nice spicy kick. The absolute best part are the Mallomars. How is this vegan? The frosting tastes like homemade whipped cream.
