In keeping with this weeks theme of reviewing destination restaurants outside of NYC, this is the first Friday Fives that hits on multiple cities. We had the South Side of Chicago’s own Kid Sister take us on a mini-tour of her favorite spots in Chi-Town, along with a couple of NYC haunts for good measure. We fully back Kid Sister’s debut album Ultraviolet (buy it at iTunes here), and we’re kind of shocked “Daydreaming” hasn’t blown up yet. That jam needs to be on the radio so people can get their Right Hand Hi and sing along.
Kid Sister’s “Perfect For” Picks
Chicago
Outdoor/Patio Situation
Volo (2008 West Roscoe St.) – “This place has a huuuge backyard – You know that good friend’s cousin’s boy who’s way loaded and drives a ridiculous ride? Yeah, this is that dudes ballified backyard playground. You rarely ever see cabanas in Chicago, this is some Vegas or Miami shit. Feed me grapes and fan me with palm trees. Work it out. Queen of the Nile. “
Full On Pork Indulgence
Publican (845 W Fulton Market) – “I did a playboy shoot here recently. I was with a Playboy bunny and we had a really good dinner too. It was funny ’cause you could tell she had never been to a place like that before because she was really young. She’s from a small town in Upstate New York and was like “Whoa.” Publican could easily be snobby, but it’s not. It’s weird, but cool. Everyone has tattoos. They serve lots of meat. Tons of meat. This is the place you go if you have a meat tooth, instead of a sweet tooth. I had half a chicken on a bed of fries with summer sausage as a garnish. Oh yes. I also ate head cheese for the very first time which was terrifying, but delicious. “
Burgers
Kuma’s Corner (2900 West Belmont Ave.) – “Best hamburger place in America, hands down. They have like 15 different kinds of burgers, and they’re all named after heavy metal bands and shit. I go once a year ’cause its so intense.”
New York
Chronic Brunch
Clinton Street Baking Company (4 Clinton St.) – “This place is sooo good. You gotta wait for like an hour and a half. Kick it, have a couple drinks, fuck it, get drunk in the morning. It’s worth the wait in gold. Eggs Benedict isn’t a trend, it’s a classic – it’ll never go out of style. “
Friday/Saturday Night Drinks & Dinner
Momofuku Ssäm Bar (207 2nd Ave.) – “When I’m in NYC, I go there with my girlfriends who I like to call the “Citysearch girls.” They’re like Yelp, you ask where do you get X, Y & Z and they’re like “computing.” They make it their business to only dine at the most interesting, awesome places. I don’t remember exactly what i had drink-wise, but i remember it being avant-garde. “
Kid Sister’s Twitter People
@chromeo – They just joined Twitter, lets get my good Canadian buds some more followers.
@noreaga – He tweets while pooping.
@caspadubstep – A right dood English lad and a hell of a producer.
@kkingdomm – A producer I discovered about three years ago – I listened to his mixtape which they were selling at Opening Ceremony, a clothing store in Soho. They gave it to me, I listened (cause i listen to everything) and it was so good. It reminded me of when I used to go to parties back in high school. He’s great and I was an early adopter.
@flosstradamus – Curt’s hilarious puns and Josh’s hilarious camera phone pictures. Oh, and Josh is my brother. He rules. Duh.
