Admit it. This thought has crossed your mind before: “Man, this Mr. Softee cone is good…but I wish it was a lot gayer.” Next time it does, all you need to do is check this Twitter feed to find out where the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck is parked.
This ice cream truck is more than just a funny name and a smart logo slapped on the side of a vehicle. Partners Douglas Quint & Bryan Petroff pair traditional soft-serve ice cream with unique toppings like wasabi pea dust, curried coconut, and sriracha. They debuted in the summer of 2009, and thanks to really good ice cream and a smart use of the interweb, they now have one of the most popular food trucks in New York City. We asked for a BGICT Friday Fives because we’re fans of anyone who has a little bit of humor and/or ice cream sandwiches. The truck is almost done for the year, but make sure celebrate season’s end with them at their Final Friday Party, October 29th.
Doug & Bryan’s “Perfect For” Picks
Dining Solo
Hearth (402 E. 12th St.) – “Both of us agree that when dining solo use the opportunity to eat at the bar or, if possible, watching the kitchen. Hearth is an excellent spot for this. Marco Canora, and his incredibly high standards, is great to watch in action.”
Full On Pork Indulgence
Porchetta (110 E. 7th St.) – “Sara Jenkins is less chef, more sorceress.”
Serious Take-Out Operation
Luke’s Lobster (either location) – “They consistently have the best lobster rolls in the city, both snack and meal size. Walk into Luke’s and you’re on the coast of Maine”
Warm Weather Dining
The Red Hook Ball Fields (Clinton St. & Bay St.) – “The Red Hook Ball Fields on weekend afternoons. The best Mexican and El Salvadorian food you can find, served from trucks and eaten at picnic tables. Perfection.”
Weekday/After Work Drinks & Dinner
Franny’s (295 Flatbush Ave.) – “Our favorite ‘what a horrible day, only the right meal will save this’ spot is Franny’s. Their high quality comfort food has never failed to mend wounds.”
