This week Fives checks in with one of our favorite up-and-coming chefs, Todd Mitgang. A few years ago, Todd was running a fantastic restaurant called Crave in the East 50′s…and then a crane fell on it. Since then, he’s put his skills to work at the under-appreciated Infatuation favorite Cascabel Taqueria, and is now about to open a dope little spot in Montauk called South Edison. With this new venture, Mitgang aims to create the ultimate surf town restaurant, bringing Manhattan standards of cuisine to the beach just south of Montauk Village. The menu is packed with summertime classics and an extensive raw bar. We were out in Montauk last weekend and did a quick walk through – check the twitpic. Can’t find us this summer? We’re probably at the South Edison bar taking down Blue Points and crab legs.
South Edison officially opens to the public this Tuesday, June 15th.
Todd’s “Perfect For” Picks
Coffee & A Light Bite
Joni’s (9 Edison Drive – Montauk, NY 11954) – “This mainstay casual spot is right across the street from South Edison, and has great coffee and tons of healthy bites. “
Mexican
The Hideaway (364 West Lake Drive – Montauk, NY 11954) – “Where I get my taco fix while away from Cascabel. This is tucked in the back of a marina with open-air dining, and is known for its Mexican food made from scratch and stand-up tequila menu.”
BYOB
Kuma Inn (113 Ludlow St.) – “The best is BYOB spot in NYC. When it comes to booze, I keep it simple: Ketel One on the rocks with olives. What’s more fun than eating Southeast Asian food on the second story of a joint on the Lower East Side?”
Full On Pork Indulgence
Ippudo (65 4th Ave.) – “Ippudo’s pork belly…I am in love.”
Quality Fish
BLT Fish (21 W. 17th St.) – “I had my wedding reception there. I love the difference in vibe between the shack and fine dining.”
Todd’s Twitter People
Todd isn’t actually on twitter, but South Edison is and here are a few people, places and things they follow.
@ThrillistHamptn – Keep up with important happenings out east all summer with Thrillist Hamptons.
@CurbedHamptons – The best way to stay on top of all the Hamptons restaurant, nightlife and real estate gossip.
@navybeach – Navy Beach is another new Montauk restaurant that just opened this summer. It’s situated right on the beach and is a great place to go grab a beer and watch the sun set.
@nyctacos – Obviously, we have a special love for Cascabel and their tacos. Don’t sleep on the Cemita Poblano (crazy Mexican pulled pork sandwich).
@PadmaLakshmi – We know she hangs out east over the summer sometimes. Hopefully she’ll stop by for dinner one night.
