When Gail Simmons hit us with her Friday Fives, she listed August as her Chronic Brunch pick. Smart woman. She made us realize that even though August has long been a staple in our lives, a review seems to have slipped through the cracks. It’s time to rectify this situation right now.

Everyone loves August. It’s impossible not to. The same way I’m always down to watch those movies that are endlessly on TV like Any Given Sunday or Empire Records, I’m also always down for brunch at August. This little European bistro is perfectly located in the heart of all the good West Village action. The friendly space smells of firewood and has an awesome glass enclosed garden that gets tons of sun. August is really a better brunch/lunch spot than it is a dinner spot. The dinner entrees are never as exciting as the eggs, sandwiches and pizza you get during the daytime hours. Plus, the prices on the dinner menu are a little steep. One dinner option we do like, however, is the Sunday night “Pizza & Peronis” meal: one pizza and four Peronis for $25. Not necessarily the Gray’s Papaya recession special, but we back the idea and the pizza is really good. Speaking of pizza and beer, dudes, listen up – August is a great First/Early In The Game Date spot. Considering that her and her friends already love it, you’ll score extra points right off the bat by taking her to the location of her last Book Club meeting. Trust me; it’s a better option than the new Dos Caminos in the Meat Packing district.

Food Rundown:

Wood Oven Baked Eggs en Cocotte
The big ticket item here are baked eggs, cooked up in their own iron skillets. August divides up the different varieties by the European region they’re inspired by. You really can’t go wrong with ordering any of these, but our favorite is absolutely the Alsatian (bacon and onion with crème fraiche) with the Andalusian (chorizo and blistered peppers) coming in a close second.

Challah Bread French Toast
So good. If you’re big on challah bread French toast, definitely calorie splurge on this one. The key to making the outside so crisp is that they finish it in the oven.

Asparagus Mimosa
One of my favorite things to order here, the asparagus mimosa is on both the lunch and dinner menu. A breaded ball of fried egg that looks like a croquette served over a heap of cold asparagus stalks with dijon dressing. Full of bold flavors, but also crisp and refreshing.

Burger
The only thing fancy about this burger is the fried egg you can elect to place on top of it (which you should do, obviously – check the twitpic). This burger is a dead ringer for the one I’m going to make on the BBQ this weekend: ground chuck, lettuce, tomato, pickles and raw onions on a nice kaiser bun. High quality and straight forward. We dig this burger.

Grilled Chorizo Sandwich
For chorizo fans who like a little spice in their life, definitely check this sandwich out. Chorizo sausages served on a super soft bun with baby arugula, blistered peppers, and spicy smoked mayonnaise. Yes.

Is it just me, or is it slim-pickins around the meat packing district these days? Finding a good scene with reasonably priced, excellent food isn’t easy. I was recently having drinks with a big group at The Standard Grill, in need of a dinner destination (we sure as hell weren’t eating there). Unfortunately, I didn’t really have a game plan in place. It’s a stressful spot to be in. An entire crew is relying on you to make the right decision and lead them to the promised land for dinner. After a couple of desperate tweets for help, I made the call, and we landed at Perry St. Was it the right call? For a Saturday night, maybe not (this is definitely more of a weekday spot), but it was the best move we could have made under the circumstances.

Perry St is in the ground floor of some super-modern, all glass building on the West Side Highway. It’s a nice place, but it’s completely sterile and a little stuffy. It’s definitely an older, more proper crowd. Got straight-laced family in town from Greenwich? This is the perfect Dinner With The Parents destination. Neither the maître d’ or the tables around us were too thrilled with our quasi-rowdy party, which by Perry St standards might as well have been a table rave. The food was a let down too. After eating a spectacular dinner at ABC Kitchen the week before, I was expecting a more dynamic meal from a Jean Georges restaurant. That being said, we would come back here and order the butter poached lobster anytime. That’s one of the single best dishes we’ve eaten this year, and it saved this review from the toilet. We also hear rumblings that they serve a decent brunch. Maybe we’ll come back and check it out, and this time we’ll bring grandma. On second thought, no we won’t. She’s too cool for this place.

Food Rundown:

Arugula and Boston Lettuce Salad
A nice starter salad. I’m a sucker for anything with Boston lettuce and mustard vinaigrette, so this plays right into my weakness.

Rice Cracker Crusted Tuna
This tuna appetizer is one of Perry St’s signature dishes – it was the number one recommendation of our waiter. Sadly, it wasn’t that memorable, partially because we only got half the dish. The other half wound up being accidentally dropped into a water glass by our server and not being replaced. Thanks dude. The rice cracker crust is certainly tasty, but it’s nothing life changing, and we expected a little more from something that comes served in a sriracha-citrus emulsion.

Sweet Chili Crab Dumplings
Another dish that arrived at our table after being highly touted, but just didn’t do it for us. There was something missing, and we couldn’t understand how this slimy green dumpling could be one of their most popular dishes.

Cod With Miso-Yuzu Glaze
Not the best miso cod we’ve ever had, but the sriracha gives the fish a serious kick of flavor. If you don’t like it spicy, take a pass on this one.

Butter Poached Lobster
$35 and not a penny overpriced. God damn was this lobster dish ridiculous. It was easily the best thing we ate all night. Rich, buttery poached lobster served over an awesome potato ravioli in a lemongrass and kaffir lime broth. You should probably come here once, just to eat this.

Char-Grilled Cheeseburger
Not too big, not too small, and sporting plenty of flavor – this is definitely a solid burger, just not a reason to come like the butter poached lobster.

We hope that you’re using our website to find good date spots. Why? Well, first of all, because you are really good looking and should have a full social calendar. Second, because we think we’re pretty good at reccommending restaurants that will give you your best chance to make some action happen. And by “some action”, we of course mean a fulfilling long-term relationship.

By no means are we claiming that dell’anima is some under the radar date haven that nobody else knows about. Ask any female that lives west of 7th Avenue and she will probably have this place in her top ten. We’re big fans too, and also hold sister restaurant L’Artusi in high regard. Both are great date spots and both have a vanity apostrophe, which makes them cool or Italian or something. Both can also be loud and a bit sceney at times, though dell’anima is much smaller and more intimate. We like dell’anima specifically for the ample bar seating and chef’s counter, perfect for a more casual meal, and making it a great First/Early in The Game Date destination. We also like it because the food is pretty damn spectacular. There are a few really special pasta dishes, and some sharable first courses that are excellent. The wine list is smart though a bit pricey, but there are a handful of good bottles under forty bucks to choose from.

One thing to note – we’ve heard some recent feedback from the field that both dell’anima and L’Artusi are too heavy handed with the salt in some dishes. These chefs definitely don’t shy away from seasoning, so take that into account. I happen to have dangerously low blood pressure, so it’s good for me.

Food Rundown:

Bruschetta
A bowl of crostini, served with your choice of bruschetta in a tiny bowl to spread on top. We reccommend ordering a few. The options change regularly, but we really like the avocado and the rapini pesto.

Charred Octopus
A few grilled octopus arms on a bed of tiny white beans with fennel sofrito. Top notch.

Vognole
Kind of a strange dish – small clams in a bowl that seem to be missing the pasta. Good with some extra crostini if you have them lying around from the bruschetta.

Endive Salad
A nice light salad of endive spears with anchovy and pecorino. Pretty straightforward.

Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese
A nice pasta, but not their best. As with all the pastas, the homemade noodles are excellent, but this bolognese isn’t quite as meaty and rich as we’d like it to be.

Garganelli
Almost like a pasta version of the dish we freaked out over at L’Artusi. A simple bowl of short tube noodles with mushroom, parsley and lemon. Mind blowing and perfect.

Tajarin
A noodle similar to tagilatelle but thinner. This is a fan favorite at dell’anima, and rightfully so. It’s a take on carbonara with a poached egg and speck instead of bacon. Hearty but not terribly heavy, and really good.

Orata
A good option from the entree menu, a nice light piece of fish that’s a can be a pleasant break from some of the aggressive seasoning you’ll find elsewhere on the menu.

Amidst a near hurricane a few weeks back, we needed a restaurant in a pinch – something within walking distance from a 30th birthday venue in the West Village. We wound up at Home Restaurant, which turned out to be an unfortunate move. You can’t make the right call all the time, and while we don’t necessarily enjoy trashing a place, we don’t want you making the same mistake we did. This was bland, unimpressive, and expensive eating and what’s worse – it’s a “critics’ pick” in NY Mag. We still can’t figure what these “critics” are basing their “picks” on (also see Accademia Di Vino). Luckily, you’ve got us for that now.

We really wanted to like this place. The vibe reminded us of a West Village version of Infatuation favorite Tree – a cozy neighborhood bistro complete with a little garden in the back. We really did like the space, and it’s unfortunate that the food and service incited wrath inside of us. Things actually started off strong. A plate of chocolate chip cookies greets you upon entry, and you know how we feel about our cookies. But, it was all downhill from there. The service is slow and apathetic for no reason, and the food was just downright bad. Now we understand why their main claim to fame is homemade ketchup. With so many good restaurants in that area, we’re surprised that Home has managed to stay open for ten years. I guess that’s what that “critic’s pick” buys you.

Food Rundown:

Whole Clam Chowder
Seriously? This is what the waiter recommended on the appetizer menu? Clams, red bliss potatoes and bacon…it all sounded good on paper, but damn was this bad. The broth had already started to coagulate on top by the time it arrived at the table. Must have been sitting around for a while. The potatoes were all severely undercooked and the bacon bits were few and far between. I would have been much happier with my standard lunch chowder from Hale & Hearty.

Crab Cakes
Another suspect appetizer, these small fried crab balls more closely resembled something you’d buy in the grocery store and heat up in the microwave rather than fare from a “critic’s pick”. Way off Platty Pants.

Black Eyed Pea Chicken Chili
This special appetizer was the saving grace of a bad first round of food and ended up being the best dish we tried all night.

Braised Short Ribs
How is it humanly possible to slow cook something for six hours and have it come out tasting like absolutely nothing? This was the most bland, tasteless short rib I’ve ever come into contact with. I can’t believe this is actually served at a restaurant. The only thing that kept us from sending this dish back was the scalloped potatoes accompanying it.

Macaroni & Cheese
The main reason we had dinner here is that we were rolling with Infatuation’s resident Mac & Cheese Expert. Home allegedly has an excellent one, and we figured we’d throw him a bone. Sadly, this $18 bowl was nothing special. Our expert ate around all the rubbery hunks of chorizo which would have served the dish better ground up.

Molasses Double Cut Pork Chop
Another colossal disaster, this pork chop was terrible. We got through half of it and then gave up all hope of finding any redeeming quality. Much like the short rib, this tasted like absolutely nothing.

Onion Rings
These were good, but definitely not amazing. Big, lightly breaded rings that are crispy in some places, soggy in others. The homemade ketchup was a nice touch, but we’d be happier with a better ring and some Heinz.

Wilfie & Nell is a cozy little bar situated right on the edge of that part of the West Village that you might also know as “the vortex”. We’ve lived in New York City for almost eight years and even with Google Maps, Hopstop and a few orienteering courses, we still get turned around down here. Luckily, there are plenty of good reasons to find yourself lost in the neighborhood, and this place is one of them.

Seeing as how we’re writing about it on this site, you would be right to assume that Wilfie & Nell is a restaurant – they serve not only dinner but now brunch, and the menu was originally curated by Momofuku alumni and Brooklyn Star owner Joaquin Baca. But it is first and foremost a place you come to drink, rather than a place you come to eat. Consider it an added bonus that the bar food you’ll likely be eating while standing near a tiny ledge is pretty good. Tables fill up quickly, as do the bar seats, and thirty people can make the place feel crowded thanks to low cielings and strange layout. Nonetheless, it’s a vibey bar that will get you cool points on a date, or maybe even land you one for later in the week. Just try not to spill mustard on your pants while you eat in the corner.

Food Rundown:

Pigs In Blankets
We’re no stranger to the common folk pigs in blankets, made with packaged mini hot dogs and Pilsbury croissant dough. We love those. Wilfie & Nell’s are more of a gastropub version with a sausage instead of a hot dog, and they’re wrapped in bacon. Not bad, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Berkshire Pork Sliders
Shredded pork on a nice fluffy little bun. These can be a little dry, but throw on a pickle and some of the mustard that comes on the side, and they’re at the very least serviceable.

Grilled Cheese
Far and away the best thing on the menu at Wilfie & Nell, and one of the best grilled cheeses we’ve eaten. Served on Blue Ribbon Pullman with perfectly gooey cheese and carmelized onions. Excellent.

Fries
Really good thick cut fries, served with malt vinegar, which we love.

We love a good girl fight, especially a lovers’ quarrel over our favorite aphrodisiacs – lobster rolls and oysters. We know this is old news, but apparently Pearl (of <a href="http://www.immaculateinfatuation.com/2010/06/pearl-oyster-bar/"title="Pearl Oyster Bar">Pearl Oyster Bar) and Mary (of Mary’s & Brooklyn Fish Camp) used to get it on like Ellen and Portia. They ran Pearl’s together until something happened. We won’t speculate, as it’s none of our business, but it’s definitely possible someone looked at someone else the wrong way one night at Meow Mix. Whatever it was, it was bad enough to drive Mary out. She packed up her lobster pots and moved into her own place down the block. Bad news for Pearl – excellent news for the rest of us.

On this island, taking a break from the beach and rolling to the local clam bar in flip flops and a bathing suit doesn’t happen. While our concrete jungle does indeed have a few solid fish shacks and oyster bars (<a href="http://www.immaculateinfatuation.com/2009/06/the-mermaid-inn/"title="The Mermaid Inn">The Mermaid Inn, <a href="http://www.immaculateinfatuation.com/2009/10/lukes-lobster/"title=Luke's Lobster">Luke’s Lobster), most come with a certain Manhattan spin that seems forced and rather lame (Ditch Plains, <a href="http://www.immaculateinfatuation.com/2009/09/lure-fishbar/"title="Lure Fishbar">Lure Fishbar). Mary’s is the rare authentic feeling fish house around these parts. It could easily be transported to Montauk or Cape Cod and fit right in. The pale pink and blue decor, simplistic dishes and laid back attitude are what we expect from a place that only serves seafood. Sure, the prices are a bit high, but this is Manhattan- everything is expensive. Mary’s is always jammed, so go in expecting to put your name on the list and then grab a drink around the corner. They’re accurate on their wait time and will call you as soon as your table is ready. As far as we’re concerned, Mary’s is one of the best seafood jams in Manhattan. Get some.

Food Rundown:

Half Dozen Malpeque Oysters</strong
Oysters are a mandatory order at Mary’s.

New Zealand Cockles with White Beans and Garlic</strong
The cockle broth is really freakin good, and they serve this dish to you with a huge side of bread for dunking.

Fried Oysters and Clams with Fish Camp Tartar Sauce</strong
These little nuggets of fried goodness are always a fun way to start off a meal. Mary’s tartar sauce is particularly good too.

Wild Maine Mussels with Red Curry and Fresh Coriander</strong
Last time we were there, these mussels were HUGE and quite flavorful. Mussels can generally be hit or miss, but Mary’s are usually pretty consistent. The red curry broth gives this bowl a nice kick.

Iceberg Lettuce Wedge with Buttermilk Dressing and Double Smoked Bacon</strong
Buttermilk dressing and double smoked bacon? Sold. Don’t waste an appetizer item here on a non-fish order. Instead, we recommend ordering this as a side as it’s better than the individual vegetables they serve as side dishes.

Spicy Florida Conch Chowder</strong
I love their conch chowder. It’s an excellent move on a cold night or for lunch.

Lobster Roll</strong
Mary is known for her beautiful, rich and incredibly tasty pink lobster rolls. Big chunks of lobster are served over a toasted hot dog bun with a huge side of fries. For those who don’t like a lot of mayo on a $25 roll, this is not for you. For those who do, you’ll agree that this is the best mayo-heavy lobster roll in the city.

Pan Fried Cod Sandwich with French Fries</strong
Another one of Mary’s specialties, this beautifully fried cod filet is served on a sourdough roll with lettuce, tomato and a side of Mary’s flattened shoestring fries.

Emerald Basin Skate with Brussels Sprout Leaves</strong
A nice portion of skate drenched, in balsamic brown butter. This dish is incredibly tasty and rather filling. If you don’t like balsamic though, don’t order it. That flavor is a little overwhelming

Dessert</strong
Since everyone around you is eating Mary’s ridiculous looking hot fudge sundae, it’s impossible to not order dessert. Both the traditional looking sundae and the banana pudding will finish off your meal just right.

In the music biz, we believe that good music will eventually prevail. If you keep putting out great records, your time in the spotlight will come. Take long time Infatuation favorite Phoenix for example. They spent the better part of the last decade flying under the mainstream radar, releasing perfect indie-pop albums that anyone who actually paid attention to, fell in love with. They finally got what’s been coming to them this past year in the form of a breakout single, “1901” and the Grammy for “Best Alternative Album.” The same philosophy can be applied in the kitchen. When you’re consistently cookin’ up the chronic, you can’t hide for long. Hell, even if you’re illegally preparing the perfect lobster roll and selling them through your mail slot in Brooklyn, someone in this town will get wind of it.

We’ve long considered Yerba Buena home to one of the more criminally underrated menus around. It was one of the first rave reviews we ever posted on this site, and for good reason. The food is tremendous. Famous for their cocktails, YB doesn’t receive the kind of culinary critical love it damn well deserves. Possibly because the original East Village location is slightly out of place – a more upscale, expensive restaurant in an area that caters to the exact opposite. While Yerba Buena EV will remain their less well known flagship, it’s their new West Village spot, Yerba Buena Perry, that’s set to catch fire like Bluth’s Frozen Banana Stand and blow their cover.

A combination of everything that’s right about Latin American food, Perry’s menu reads like an Infatuation wet dream. Pork belly arepas, chorizo, fish tacos, ceviches, short ribs and a new wrinkle for Yerba Buena, dry aged steaks served with four different dipping sauces. It all tastes as good as it sounds too. Add ridiculous cocktails, tables full of girls, excellent service and a prime location into the mix, and we’ve got ourselves a brand new go-to spot. Don’t sleep, this needs to be your next destination for a Friday/Saturday Drinks & Dinner, Girl’s Night Out or Scoping Hot Girls/Guys adventure. Yerba Buena Perry for dinner, followed by drinks at Highlands, black-out on the sidewalk, and stumble into Joseph Leonard for breakfast the next morning. That’s the move.

Food Rundown:

Guacamole
With huge chunks of avocado mixed with red onion, chipotle and fresco, this dip is definitely different. It tasted like a combination of guac and salsa. We dig.

Arepas
Everyone’s favorite Venezuelan sandwich snack. Served as a pair, these plump mini pitas come stuffed with coffee glazed pork belly and cabbage slaw. A must order.

Chicharron De Calamar
Blue corn meal crusted calamari with sweet plantains in a tamarind vinaigrette that tasted like a light balsamic. The corn meal crust is fried and after being combined with the plantains, comes out tasting super sweet and crunchy, almost like a dessert. Truly unique and different from any other calamari we’ve ever eaten.

Tacos De Pescado
If the fish tacos weren’t on the Perry St. menu, we would have had issues. Being one of my personal favorites, I happily wolfed down two of these baja style tilapia tacos with chipotle-mango slaw. They’re so good, I don’t care that I’m paying $13 for two.

Grilled Black Cod
With so many good options, deciding which entrees to order was tough. We had to get one fish and the black cod got the call over the cachaca shrimp. Cooked with fennel, yerba mate consommé and dill chimichurri, this small-ish piece of fish was spicy and delicious. An excellent way to balance a table filled with meat.

16oz Dry Aged Rib Eye
The quality of the steaks blew us away. For $35, this is a damn good cut of meat. The rib eye was big, juicy and sweating with fatty flavor. The steaks come served on their own wood cutting board, with four different sauces (chimichurri, horseradish, aji panca and one other I forget), making each bite a new adventure. Our favorite being the horseradish, that’s some good shit.

Costilla
Short Rib special? You know we’re all over that. Especially at a Latin spot, their short rib is down, dirty and delicious. As an interesting twist, it came with lo mein that was topped with poached egg.

12oz New York Strip
Similar to the rib eye, the strip came out on its own wood cutting board with the full compliment of sauces. Less fatty than the rib eye, but a few dollars cheaper and equally as awesome.

Watermelon French Fries
That’s right, fried watermelon. Very different. Very cool. By the end of the night I was dunking watermelon fries in my drink and eating them.

Spinach
Is that pop rocks in our spinach? Nope, those are dried figs bringing this simple green to life.

Dulce De Leche Sundae
We don’t do dessert much, but we have a hard time resisting dulce de leche. The Panqueque was great (dulce de leche crepe, spiced pumpkin seeds, pistachio ice cream), but it was the sundae that absolutely stole the show. Two scoops of dulce de leche ice cream with bananas, candied pecans and dulce de leche drizzled on top. Amazing.

Joseph Leonard is 650 square feet of seriously hyped restaurant. By my estimation that makes about four bloggers per square foot that wrote it up based on a pencil sketch and insider information from a delivery guy. I guess that makes us late to the game. So while we won’t exactly follow suit and take you through the place of origin of every antique light fixture and picture frame in the building, we will tell you this – it looks like a tastefully furnished studio apartment that’s 50% bar (my kind of apartment). It’s also pretty obvious that the restaurant was conceived in the spirit of Little Owl. Every inch of space serves a purpose, including the upper level bar seats, perfectly engineered for surveying the action while you eat. The menu is American with both French and Southern touches, and while dinner is generally better than brunch, it’s a nice place to dine any time of day. We like it and will visit often – a new West Village go-to even – but you’ll find that all that hype is pretty hard to live up to. Don’t look to us if you go in expecting a religious experience and come away a little disappointed. That’s what you get for spending too much time on Yelp.

Soggy Toast
People rave about this. It’s exactly what it sounds like – toast that has become soggy from pan drippings, covered in mushrooms and a poached egg. Its a nice dish, but I wouldn’t put it in my “poached eggs make everything better” hall of fame.

Steak au Poivre
Very well executed, and ridiculously good, this might be my favorite thing on the menu at J. Leonard. I swear there is more going on with the seasoning here than just black pepper…maybe some star anise? It doesn’t matter, it’s tasty. Oh yeah, and it sits on top of scalloped potatoes cooked in duck fat.

Crispy Braised Pork Hock
We’ve had plenty of pork hock and shank in our lives, but this one stands out because it has an incredibly tasty and crispy skin. Thank you deep fryer. Also the greens on the plate were surprisingly tasty. Might have been the most flavorful pile of arugula I’ve had. It’s amazing what a difference a correctly seasoned salad makes.

Brussels Sprouts with Sriracha
Sriracha makes everything better, and you know this.

Egg Sandwich
Nice because it’s served on a croissant, and we like that. This is a good brunch option, and comes with some of those brussels sprouts.

Saucisson a L’ail
One of the better things we’ve had a Joseph Leonard, brunch or otherwise. Excellent hand made pork sausages with a huge extra crunchy hash brown on the plate. Order this and a bloody mary with a beer chaser and you’ll be feeling like a million bucks.

Biscuits and Gravy
The homemade biscuits were nice, but the gravy was too light and not porky enough. Having biscuits and gravy on the menu is cute and all, but please don’t tease me. There should be so much thick gravy on the plate that I can’t see the biscuits, but merely sense their presence.

On a recent trip to the West Village we were stopped dead in our tracks. Whoa. What on God’s green earth do we have here? The bar standing in front of us was truly immaculate. We couldn’t look away. There was some kind of Daniel Faraday/Lost island style frequency sucking us inside even though our lives were supposed to go down a different path that night. We couldn’t resist it. We bailed on our plans and hit the Highlands.

As we suspected, Highlands is an Infatuation kind of joint. Rows of whiskey and bourbon line the exposed brick walls behind the bar. A packed house of put together, good looking locals sip on dark drinks, specialty cocktails and international beers with high alcohol content. Everyone is feelin’ it and having a grand ol’ time. Although we haven’t been on the weekend, we hear it’s slammed shoulder to shoulder, Spotted Pig style.

Traditionally Scottish, this gastropub brings the likes of cullen skink (fish and potato soup) and haggis (sheep’s ‘pluck’, heart, liver & lungs) to the Big Apple. It’s certainly the only place in the West Village that actually has faggot listed on the menu, in this case of the pork variety. Although it may be PC where they come from, we’re more comfortable pointing to it on the menu than actually saying it out loud. In typical Scottish fashion, the food was just ok, but if you pick and choose your dishes carefully, you can have a good meal. The meat plate, cockles, haggis and lamb shank are the way to go. Keep in mind, this is absolutely a bar first, restaurant second and we took that into consideration when judging the place.

Food Rundown:

Arran Goat Cheese
A nice, light option to start, but nothing to get crazy excited about. It’s a pretty typical beet and goat cheese salad with baby greens and grapefruit.

Pound of Cockles
A pound really isn’t that much, especially when they’re tiny clams. Our table could have put away four pounds of these easily. The broth of shallots, pinot gris and sarawak pepper is excellent, and the fact they brought over extra bread for dunking purposes without having to ask scored Highlands extra points in our book.

Meat Plate
We sampled the Chorizo Picante, Wild Boar Salami and the Dry Cured Duck Breast, all of which were pretty tasty and went well with our Scottish beers. Definitely a good plate to share.

Wild Mushroom Shepherd’s Pie
The texture of the mushrooms was spot on – they felt like minced lamb in the mouth. Not a bad vegetarian dish. We’d definitely order this again.

Haggis
Since lamb lungs can’t be exported from the UK (due to mad cow disease…it was actually illegal until recently), Highlands opts to roll with beef liver instead and add it to a mixture of lamb heart, lamb meat and oatmeal and served in between rows of mashed rutabagas and potatoes. It sounds gross, but it’s actually quite good (and filling). If you’re the mood to get adventurous, order up some haggis.

Pork Faggot
Didn’t care for this at all. Three bites in, I’d had enough. The ground up pork mixed on top of applesauce had a baby food vibe to it. Skip.

Baked Cod
A nice piece of fish served with bubble and squeak, capers and arugula. The presentation was nice- if you want to go fish, opt for this one.

Lamb Shank
The Malbec braise on this beastly shank gave it an excellent glaze and the brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes it came with were nice accompaniments. This is the best thing on the menu.

Wow. How did we not know that Kingswood is such a scene? There are so many single ladies circling that bar that it feels like a perfume-laden shark tank. There’s blood in the water and I’m scared.

A restaurant like this is the entire reason that we created a category for Action at the Bar, and we’re also going to tag this one with Drunk Hook Ups, because that’s precisely what’s going down post-meal in Kingswood’s basement bar. Now, a restaurant with a crazy scene usually means mediocre food (Abe & Arthurs), but a meal at Kingswood can actually be pretty great – though everything is a bit too expensive and i’m still not exactly sure how it’s Australian. I certainly didn’t see any Bloomin’ Onions on the menu. The burger is killer, some of the appetizers are excellent, and brunch is good, but at the end of the day, Kingswood is built for one thing – mixing it up with strangers. There’s a large communal table that makes up a good deal of the restaurant’s seating, and the bar in front is a rectangle, perfect for scoping and being scoped. We’ve had a few meals at the bar and have been lucky spectators to a many a game of “slam your wine and go talk to him”. This must be where they find all the girls for The Bachelor.

Food Rundown:

Pork Fritters with Granny Smith Apple, Soy Caramel, Watercress and Candied Hazelnuts
Imagine a crab cake, but with pork. Amazing, but there is no way to eat this without feeling like bad things are going to happen to your body.

Prince Edward Island Mussels with Lemongrass, Green Curry, Coconut, Cilantro and Jalapeño
Very similar to the Thai mussels at Flex. A tasty plate for sure, but Flex’s version might be better. The giant piece of grilled bread for sopping up the green broth is nice.

Ruby’s Bronte Burger with Cheddar, Sweet Chili Sauce, Truffle Mayo and Fries
Other than the talent, this is what you come to Kingswood for. The sweet chili sauce is kind of mind blowing, and it’s a tasty mess of a burger.

Spiced Baby Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, Lime, Maple Syrup and Fried Egg
An unusual treatment to the now ubiquitous sprouts. The egg is nice, but that maple syrup is a little wacky. We like the more standard side dish version.

<pMacaroni and Cheese with Truffle Oil
Yes, this is delicious, but you can put truffle oil on newspaper and it will taste good.
