You know how it feels like some establishments were built precisely for you? That’s how we feel about Death & Co. Any place that makes room on their menu to quote Hunter S. Thompson – “I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity, but they’ve always worked for me.” – is on our wavelength. It’s no secret that we like to booze. When it comes to fancy cocktails, Death & Co is one of our favorites. The drink list is ridiculous…it’s nearly impossible to settle on something because each beverage is intriguing and awesome. Some of our favorites are the Cure For Pain (rye whiskey, vermouth, bourbon and more goodness) and the seriously tasty Rita Hayworth (pineapple and sage-infused siembra tequila, lime juice and acacia honey syrup). Damn is she fine.

It wasn’t until recently that we figured out D&C was more than just a place to grab a libation or two. You can actually have an excellent meal as well. Think of it as tapas joint the resembles a wedding cocktail hour: American classics that go quite well with a drink shaken or stirred. The kitchen paces itself well, so dishes come out one at a time, and they give you a chance to enjoy your drink as well as the food. After a long day, a Robert Johnson Swizzle (single barrel bourbon, lime juice, 10yr port, vanilla syrup and more) with a side of truffle mac n cheese is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Food Rundown:

Tuna Tartare
Some of the best tuna tartare we’ve had in recent memory and a steal at twelve bucks – it’s a nice amount of food. The tuna has a really nice spicy kick, and it’s served with homemade kettle corn chips that are stupid good. Get this.

Truffle Mac & Cheese
When we sent out a tweet from Death & Co, we got like 6 replies all saying some version of “holy crap the mac and cheese spoons are off the chain!” The people are never wrong. Indeed, this stuff is chronic. Served on individual spoons, this mac with aged cheddar and truffle bread crumbs hits the spot.

Seared Petite Filet Mignon
A pleasantly surprising ditty of a steak. The meat has a great seared crust on it, and for sixteen dollars, we aren’t complaining. This is really good, and could easily fill up one not-so-starving person.

Lobster Brioche Rolls
Three lobster sliders served on toasted brioche rolls. These bad boys were a great compliment to the Grass Kilt (coconut green tea-infused grouse scotch, lemon juice, pineapple juice, acacia honey syrup, cinnamon syrup) I was sipping when they rolled out of the kitchen. Now, this isn’t the purist Luke’s Lobster approach – this is more of a chicken salad type of lobster salad as the lobster bits are mixed in equal parts with crunchy jicama, apple and fennel slaw. They’re little mini lobster sandwiches, and they’re good.

Wild Mushroom Tart
Sautéed mushrooms with caramelized onion pesto and walnuts on top of a pastry tart. Surprisingly tasty, and definitely a good drinking snack.

A while back, Stang wrote a letter to Little Owl, which I thought was one of his best reviews to date. Now it’s my turn.

Dearest Al Di La. It’s taken way too long for this relationship to get off the ground. People have been telling me about you for a while now, saying we’d be the perfect match. It just so happens that low key Italian ladies that don’t abuse my credit card are right in my wheelhouse. I hear you’re pretty good in the kitchen too. Unfortunately, stalking you on the internet can only get me so far. I’m jealous of the others who’ve had their way with you and brag about it all over Yelp. And why can’t I find you on Facebook?

Up until now, distance is the only thing that has kept us from this inevitable union. I have been making an effort to get out to Brooklyn more, but Park Slope? You’re really making this difficult. Nonetheless, I’m glad I made the trip. You are everything that I knew you would be. I love those huge communal tables you have. And wow…those are tight specials and perfectly sized portions. I’m going to start hitting shows at The Bell House all the time now, just so I have an excuse to see you. I do have one problem though. At some point, I am going to have to tell my girlfriend about you. Maybe, when the time is right, you guys can meet. I know she would like you. But I need time. First I’m going to have to convince her to be OK with a little ménage à pasta.

Food Rundown:

Fresh Spring Salad
Make sure you pay attention to the salads, especially the specials. This chopped salad boasted all kinds of awesome fresh greens along with fava beans, green beans, asparagus, peas and fennel in a zesty champagne vinaigrette.

Steamed Mussels
A big ass pot of jumbo mussels. Served in an excellent garlic broth, the biggest prize is at the bottom where a thick piece of bread sits, soaking up the goodness. We fully back these.

Pea Ravioli
Amazing homemade ravioli. Check the TwitPic. Inside the pasta was a heavenly spring pea puree with marscapone cheese, and they came served with a ridiculous butter sauce and fresh peas for garnish. This is pasta perfection.

Squid Ink Risotto
Al Di La is known for their risottos and has rotating specials. Order one to share, they’re generous portions. The squid ink risotto is absolutely tremendous.

Saltimbocca Alla Romana
A boneless pork loin scallopine with sage, prosciutto and sauteed potatoes. This was definitely our least favorite dish of the night, but that’s partly due to the fact that we were stuffed by this point. Either way, we wish we had ordered the rabbit which we hear is ridiculous. Next time.

After being hyped on this place by friends and food media for the last year, I was pretty confident Aldea was going to be a John Starks over the entire Bulls team kind of slam dunk. Not the case. While some of their highly touted dishes – namely the sea urchin toast and duck paella – were certainly quite good, the rest of the food wasn’t nearly as impressive. Some of it even had to be sent back, and we rarely ever play that game.

Aldea pimps out their chef, George Mendes, New Orleans style. In NOLA, chef photos and accolades greet you at the front door and decorate restaurant walls, watching you eat. By the time your meal is finished, you know damn well that John Besh or Donald Link is the man that made it all possible. Aldea revolves its world around Mendes in a similar way. Our waiter must have dropped George’s name three or four times, and I guarantee he’s required to do that. It all feels a little desperate…if your food is that good, New Yorkers will recognize. No need to shove it in our faces. Despite all the name dropping, Aldea is a very comfortable eating environment. We lucked out and got the best seat in the house, the back booth right in front of the kitchen, which you should absolutely request when you’re making a reservation. Overall, we’re not saying Aldea is a bad restaurant, it just doesn’t live up to all the hype. We’ll go back sometime, we’re just not in any rush.

Food Rundown:

Jamon Iberico
Definitely some high quality ham, but for $21, it’s not worth the high price tag. Spend the money on something else.

Sea Urchin Toast
Ok. This was good. Really good. But it’s also incredibly rich. Chunks of sea urchin (which look like slices of mandarine oranges) sit on top of a thin toasted cracker-thing with cauliflower cream and sea lettuce. Pretty great.

Salt Cod Croquettas
Possibly the creamiest cod crox we’ve ever had. I personally enjoyed them, but the rest of the table was not feelin’ the ultra-smooth texture of these.

Wellfleet Oysters
Six Oysters, seventeen bucks. I mean, come on. That’s a bit much, especially when they suck. The oysters were quite disappointing, as was the pickled ramp mignonette. Next.

Slow-Poached Egg
This was excellent. A slow poached egg sitting in a light spring garlic broth with truffle, sweet peas and smoked bacon. Break the yolk and mix everything together for the ultimate bite.

Tilefish
Holy crap, this was gross. So bad that we actually sent it back to catch a little fire (the fish wasn’t cooked at all). It appeared that they plated and garnished the fish right out of the fridge, and this wasn’t supposed to be a sushi dish. When it came back cooked, it didn’t matter. This fish tasted like it’d been sitting around for weeks and the biggest travesty is that it came highly recommended from our waiter. Stay away from the tilefish.

Arroz De Pato
The dish Aldea is famous for, and pretty much the reason that we came. New York Magazine awarded it “Best Paella” and the Village Voice named it the Best Duck Dish of 2009. It’s definitely really good, but as with this entire restaurant, it just didn’t blow me (or the rest of my table), away. A paella of duck confit, chorizo, olive, and duck cracklings, the texture is fantastic, but the flavors are just a tad too overbearing.

Pork and Clams
Don’t let the name fool you, this really is just a pork belly dish. I thought we’d get a healthy dose of both belly and clams, but that wasn’t the case. There were maybe three clams on the plate, seemingly for decoration only. That being said, the thin strips of pork belly were quite savory and the sweet and sour glaze was really tasty.

Jean-Georges kills it. We know this. The dude is one of the most inventive and creative chefs that’s ever lived. The locavore/farm to table movement that has recently taken hold of the New York dining scene is nothing new to J.G. – he’s been quietly playing that game for decades. That’s why it’s no surprise that when he finally decided to put his cards on the table, he flopped a boat.

Time Out reports that J.G. is calling ABC his “hippie restaurant”. It’s such a well thought out concept, at first you almost want to roll your eyes and brush it off as one big cliche. Don’t do it. Embrace the flannel shirts, recycled paper towels and foliage free branches. This is industrial rustic done right. Everything is incredibly well executed, and the attention to detail really caught our eye. We’re usually not the type to discuss light fixtures or artwork at the dinner table, but for a brief moment in time, we actually managed to sustain a conversation about something other than our typical immature dinner banter. The ladies at our table were in heaven, and we’re honestly surprised that they didn’t try to stuff every piece of mismatched china and clay dinnerware into their purses. Speaking of purses, typically Jean-Georges dining comes with a hefty price tag, but that’s not the case at ABC Kitchen. This is actually an affordable way to experience his cuisine – indulge you should. A diverse mix of salads, pizzas, pastas and main course proteins decorate a menu that’s meant to be shared. Take a hit and pass, it’s the hippie way.

Food Rundown:

Ramp Toast
Make sure you sample at least one of the toast options on the market table section of the menu. We were all set to roll with the Peekytoe crab toast until we heard the specials. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Green Pea Soup
When was the last time you ordered pea soup and had whole peas show up in your bowl? This isn’t your standard pea soup…oh no, these peas are fresh out of JG’s garden and into your belly. There’s something refreshing about how simple this soup is – peas and carrots with a hint of mint. Good stuff.

Mackerel Sashimi
When eating off a balanced menu like this, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not messing with one of the light seafood apps. Since fluke rarely impresses, we went mackerel and really enjoyed it. The ginger marinade really gave it some nice additional flavor.

Roast Carrot and Avocado Salad
This is quickly becoming one of ABC’s signature dishes and with good reason. I usually leave words like “divine” for females to use on their own food blogs, but in this case, I might actually play that card. That’s exactly what a well constructed bite of this salad is – a little bit of carrot, some avocado and a few seeds all in the same mouthful. Divine.

Pretzel Dusted Calamari
This whole ‘pretzel dust’ thing is a little gimmicky and didn’t taste any different from other batches of calamari. My one complaint here is that underneath the alleged pretzel dusting was rubbery, overcooked calamari. The two dipping sauces were excellent though, and somewhat made up for the chewy squid

Bowtie Pasta with Kasha and Veal Meatballs
Jean-Georges’ take on an old Jewish dish Kasha varnishkes would probably have my ancestors rolling in their graves, but had us scraping the plate clean. If you are ordering one pasta dish, this is the one to get. The crispy kasha and fresh bowtie pasta played off the veal meatballs perfectly. Our table freaked out over this.

Whole Wheat Pizza with Clams
God damn. For me personally, it doesn’t get any better than this right here. A ridiculous amount little neck clams brought to life by hints of mint, parsley and fresh chilies. If you like clams, spicy and pizza like me, you’ll be in heaven.

Chili-Herbed Black Sea Bass
A nice piece of fish, this sea bass with a little extra kick was good, not great. If we could do it all over again, we’d roll with the arctic char or cod.

Organic Crispy Chicken
Ideally crispy on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside. Well executed and highly recommended.

Dessert
Saving a little space for sweets here is worth your while. Definitely order the sundae with salted caramel-peanut ice cream, candied popcorn, whipped creme fraiche & chocolate sauce. All you need is a couple bites, but those couple bites are glorious. Other fan faves included the chocolate cake with marshmallow icing and vanilla & citrus cream doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce. Good times.

Let’s take a moment to set the record straight here. If any of you happen to show up at a restaurant and see Padma Lakshmi sitting at a table, it is your duty as a citizen to let us know. Hit us up on Twitter, send an email, put up the bat signal or, at the very least, sedate her and tag her ear so we can track her whereabouts. But please do something. Just as I was about to write this review of Il Posto Accanto, a close friend tells me he was there on our recommendation and saw the Indian queen of food and sexy dining at the bar with a friend. He just didn’t feel the need to tell us until two days later. How are we supposed to get a Friday Fives/start a family with her if our informants are sitting on info? I guess even though the intel is old, it does confirm that we have awesome taste. Il Posto Accanto is fantastic.

There is a good chance you’ve eaten Italian food on this block before, and if you haven’t, it’s time you do. This one street is home to not only Il Posto Accanto and it’s sister restaurant Il Baggato, but also date night MVP Supper. But Il Posto Accanto is the one that nobody seems to talk about. It’s the smallest, quietest, and least flashy of the three Italian spots on the block, and that’s what makes it great. You can still roll in on a Friday night and get a seat because everyone else is trying to get a table next door at Il Baggato. What they don’t know is that the two restaurants share a kitchen, and Il Posto Accanto is home to some of the best meatballs and pastas in town, along with a great wine list and open air dining. We were honestly sort of torn about writing this place up, but you’re a loyal reader and deserve to have it in your repertoire. Just promise you won’t tell New Jersey.

Food Rundown:

Meatballs</strong
Three to an order, swimming in a bowl of sauce. These might be the best meatballs in town. No matter what else you are ordering, get an order and split it.

Scialatielli
Fantastically simple pasta, this is a long, wide noodle in a basic tomato sauce, and it’s almost perfect.

Cavatelli with Spicy Sausage
Another favorite of the pastas, this is spicy and garlicky and will lay down a nice base for the gallon or so of wine you drink.

Garganelli Botarga
Don’t try this one if you’re not a fan of botarga, and we’re betting you aren’t. This is a nod to Il Posto Accanto’s authenticity – a traditional Sicilian pasta with fish roe. Definitely an acquired taste.

Tortellini Con Ragu
The best things at Il Posto Accanto really are the simple pastas. These tortellini are delicate but stand up nicely to the hearty meat sauce.

Wilfie & Nell is a cozy little bar situated right on the edge of that part of the West Village that you might also know as “the vortex”. We’ve lived in New York City for almost eight years and even with Google Maps, Hopstop and a few orienteering courses, we still get turned around down here. Luckily, there are plenty of good reasons to find yourself lost in the neighborhood, and this place is one of them.

Seeing as how we’re writing about it on this site, you would be right to assume that Wilfie & Nell is a restaurant – they serve not only dinner but now brunch, and the menu was originally curated by Momofuku alumni and Brooklyn Star owner Joaquin Baca. But it is first and foremost a place you come to drink, rather than a place you come to eat. Consider it an added bonus that the bar food you’ll likely be eating while standing near a tiny ledge is pretty good. Tables fill up quickly, as do the bar seats, and thirty people can make the place feel crowded thanks to low cielings and strange layout. Nonetheless, it’s a vibey bar that will get you cool points on a date, or maybe even land you one for later in the week. Just try not to spill mustard on your pants while you eat in the corner.

Food Rundown:

Pigs In Blankets
We’re no stranger to the common folk pigs in blankets, made with packaged mini hot dogs and Pilsbury croissant dough. We love those. Wilfie & Nell’s are more of a gastropub version with a sausage instead of a hot dog, and they’re wrapped in bacon. Not bad, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Berkshire Pork Sliders
Shredded pork on a nice fluffy little bun. These can be a little dry, but throw on a pickle and some of the mustard that comes on the side, and they’re at the very least serviceable.

Grilled Cheese
Far and away the best thing on the menu at Wilfie & Nell, and one of the best grilled cheeses we’ve eaten. Served on Blue Ribbon Pullman with perfectly gooey cheese and carmelized onions. Excellent.

Fries
Really good thick cut fries, served with malt vinegar, which we love.

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve probably eaten a ton of Sullivan St. Bakery’s bread. Over 250 of New York City’s restaurants and markets serve this fine yeast, from Babbo to Dean & Deluca to Murray’s Cheese. When you dominate NYC’s dough scene, why not start a pizza joint? Co. (aka Company) is the hip, quasi-new addition to the Sullivan St. Bakery monopoly, and features a more complete menu than other next level pizza-throbs like Motorino and Keste. While the pizza is damn tasty, it’s not of the traditional variety. It arrives in awkward shapes and plays out more like awesome bread with toppings than actual pizza…which is by no means a bad thing.

Small details go a long way with Immaculate Infatuation. We feel a soundtrack of MSTRKRFT into Operation Ivy, big time. We feel $25 growlers of Six Points Sweet Action to share, especially when you’re provided with frosty glasses. We feel welcoming, informative service. And we definitely feel Co’s Chelsea friendly “Pie-curious” t-shirts. Before eating a thing, we were already pro-Co. Granted, we didn’t have to wait for a table, which isn’t a Co. diner’s usual fate. It’s first come, first serve and the waits can often be up to an hour. Is it ever worth an hour wait for pizza? We think not. Avoid the crowds and come early for dinner, or late for lunch.

Food Rundown:

Pizza Bianca</strong
An appetizer sized flat bread with only olive oil and salt. Co. wastes no time putting their bread on full display.

Toast</strong
We sampled the roasted eggplant which was a little questionable (too sweet) and the rapini and ricotta, which was excellent.

Beet Salad</strong
Big quarters of roasted purple beets tossed with olive oil, pumpkin seeds, scallion and watercress. The best salad on the menu, just be careful not to get any beet juice on your shirt. That shit stains.

Radicchio Salad</strong
Another excellent salad option, this small plate of radicchio was balanced nicely with shiitake mushrooms and taleggio cheese and dressed in balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Margherita Pie</strong
The pies here are pretty small. We did one each for a table full of dudes and walked away full. The margherita pie is solid, but you should probably entertain other options. There are better pizzas to get dirty with on the menu.

Meatball Pie</strong
Even underneath a the heavy pressure of tomato, buffalo mozzarella, veal meatballs, caramelized onions, olives, aged pecorino and oregano, this bread holds up well. I liked the fact that the toppings stopped towards the edges, leaving just enough room for the fluffy dough to crust properly; very well executed.

Flambe Pie</strong
One of our favorites, this sweet mess was the gooiest of the pies we tried. Bechamel, parmesan, buffalo mozz, caramelized onions and lardons. The lardons and caramelized onions provide an intense smoky/sweet flavor.

Fennel & Coppa Pie</strong
Flop city right here, we made the wrong play call with this one. Fennel, coppa, buffalo mozzarella, pecorino, parmesan, béchamel, red onions and lemon zest created one sloppy, unappetizing mess.

Popeye Pie</strong
Another stud, this three cheese (buffalo mozzarella, gruyere, pecorino) spinach pie was excellent. The garlic and black pepper add a nice kick.

In case you haven’t noticed, Cobble Hill is fully stacked with great restaurants these days, many of which are new Infatuation favorites. Right at the top of that list is Char No. 4, and it’s easy to see why. It’s essentially my New York City dream house – a warm, inviting space with a wall of bourbon and a smoker. When we sell this website to Excite or Lycos or whoever is spending money these days, that’s totally what I’m buying. I guess for now I’ll have to stick with my current method of tossing a few woodchips into the toaster and ripping the batteries out of the smoke alarm.

While smoking meat is definitely a huge part of what Char No. 4 does (you’ll notice that damn near everything on the dinner menu is a “house smoked” something), it’s not all just ribs and brisket sandwiches. This is Southern influenced food in New York City, and you will find some really creative things on the menu, like the insanely good lamb pastrami, a ridiculous crispy sweet potato gnocchi, and a more than respectable brunch. We recently decided to put it all to the test by bringing in some palates even more discerning than ours. One of our favorite new bands hails from Dallas, and we decided to introduce them to Southern food, Brooklyn style. Take a look and see what happens when Char No. 4 meets Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights.

Food Rundown:

House Smoked Thick Cut Bacon
Two pieces of smoky, chewy bacon goodness. I swear each strip is an inch thick, and it’s up there with the best we’ve ever had.

House Cured Lamb Pastrami
In a city that’s known for good pastrami, this is good pastrami of the highest order – and it came from a cute, little, delicious lamb. Shaved thin and served with two big pieces of rye toast and a coriander aioli.

Chopped Pork Sandwich with Char No. 4 Mustard Barbecue Sauce
This is what eating BBQ is all about. Chopped pork on a soft bun, and a tangy mustard barbecue sauce to pull it all together. Simple and incredible.

House Smoked Brisket Sandwich with Pickled Cabbage & Beer Cheese
Another home run of a sandwich. Putting beer cheese on anything is a no-lose situation.

House Smoked Spare Ribs
More deliciousness courtesy of Char No. 4’s in-house smoker. These ribs are big and meaty, and served with sauce on the side (i’m a fan of that). Char No. 4’s barbecue sauce is a marriage of all the unique characteristics you’ll find in famous BBQ sauce from each region of the country. Remember when you were a kid and you would mix all the different types of fountain sodas in one cup (where i’m from that was called a “suicide”)? This is a BBQ sauce suicide and it makes my mouth happy.

There was a time back in the day (2003) when we thought Landmarc was about as good as dinner out could get. I can’t even remember why to be honest with you, I think it mostly comes from the fact that when we did go, it was before a show and we were with our music executive bosses and their corporate cards. To 23 year old Stang and Steinthal, a dinner at Landmarc was essentially one step closer to living like R. Kelly in the “Ignition” video. Cristal wasn’t exactly poppin’ in the stretch Navigator, but a steak that someone else paid for definitely made the dream feel a little closer to reality.

Fast forward seven or so years and our views on the place have changed quite a bit. Maybe the food has gone downhill, maybe our standards are higher, or maybe a few disastrous experiences at the Time Warner Center location have just soured us on the place, but Landmarc doesn’t feel as special any more. As a matter of fact, it feels very mediocre and very over priced. Yes, there are decent eats to be had – breakfast is generally good, the mussels above average, and the steaks are tasty – but you’ll spend more than you should, especially with so many better options in the area. At the end of the day, Landmarc just isn’t worth the money. Go spend your hard earned cash somewhere with food everywhere as if the party was catered.

Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

Food Rundown:

Mussels</strong
One of Landmarc’s strong points. The classic is a good way to go, but we also love the chorizo & onion. Comes with thick, dense bread for sopping.

Boudin Noir
This is awful. A loosely packed sausage that essentially pours out of it’s casing and tastes like meat soup. What’s worse is that this is filed under “Landmarc Specials” on the menu, and the waitress highly recommended it.

Fried Calamari
Tough and generally unimpressive.

Smoked Mozzarella & Ricotta Fritters
A light and airy fried ball of cheese. Go for these over the calamari or any of the other appetizers for that matter.

Landmarc Hamburger
A pretty decent burger, it’s big and juicy and comes served with thick cut fries and a huge pile of greens. Definitely a safe bet. If you’re adding cheese, we recommend the smoked mozzarella.

Skirt Steak
This is a nice skirt steak, but $32? I don’t think so. There isn’t a steak at Les Halles that costs more than $30, and for just about the same amount of money you get a fourteen ounce ribeye at Dylan Prime.

Skirt Steak Salad
Good, but still $25. For a salad.

There was a time when this was the only restaurant anywhere near the Upper East side that we would make a trip for. J.G. Melon’s is one of the better burgers in New York City, and it had it’s 30th anniversary long before Shake Shack and Five Guys started opening up locations around town like Duane Reade. Nowadays there are a few more culinary bright spots in the area (namely Cascabel and Flex), but it seemed nessecary that we give J.G. Melon’s it’s due respect.

If you haven’t been, there are a few things you should know: it will inevitably be crowded, you need to drink beers by the bottle (not from the tap), and the service will not be friendly. But before you go running to Yelp to tell all your “friends” about how mean they were to you, consider this – it’s a New York institution that’s been serving burgers since TGI Friday’s was nothing more than a swinging singles bar down the street. Respect your elders and eat.

Photo Credit: Nick Solares/A Hamburger Today

Food Rundown:

Burgers</strong
A fantastic, flavorful burger cooked on a flattop and served on a lightly toasted and soft bun. This isn’t a down and dirty burger you’ll wrestle with, but rather a simple classic that fits nicely in your hand. Don’t be afraid to mess around with grilled onions – they’re tasty – and we definitely reccommend adding bacon.

Cup of Chili
Melons also happens to serve a surprisingly great chili. Take that Wendy’s.

Cottage Fries
Awesome little fries the size of a quarter and ribbed for your pleasure. Some will be crispy, and some will not, which is perfect.

Beers
It’s important to know that draught beers here are small, often flat, and kind of warm. Maybe I’ve been to Corner Bistro too much, but there’s something appealing to me about drinking nasty beer from the tap before I eat a burger. Nonetheless, order by the bottle to be safe.
